about

“Flowers” is the debut single from Melbourne singer-songwriter Audrey Powne who will be familiar to Melbourne audiences as the enigmatic lead singer of Leisure Centre (FKA The Do Yo Thangs) and Au Dré.

“Flowers” is a cinematic pop journey with lush orchestral production which hails imagery of Disney Princess’s and romance in stark contrast to it’s story of naiveté, loss of innocence and ultimately heart break.

Audrey describes the autobiographical inspiration for the song… “My mum told me once when I was younger to ‘never trust a man who gives you flowers’ they’re probably trying to get away with something. It seemed incredibly cynical at the time until as a young woman I found myself bombarded with Red Roses from a boyfriend who repeatedly cheated on me. It was one of those moments where I thought MAYBE my mum was right.”

The sincere and emotive songwriting is complimented by rich cinematic orchestration featuring a flourishing 8 piece String section, Harp, Vibraphone and Piano/Wurlitzer parts interweaving with each other to create an ethereal, celestial atmosphere. Meanwhile underneath all this at the songs foundation is a Soul rhythm section track reflecting the profound influence of 70s soul ballads from the likes of Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield. All this is lead by Audrey Powne’s subtle but engaging vocals crooning over the top of it all.

lyrics

When you bought me roses,
I should’ve questioned your motives,
But I was young and you seemed devoted
And I didn’t truly know men

When you bought me daisies
I didn’t know you were shady
I was in love and things were hazy
But I never thought you’d find another lady

It feels like de ja vu, each girl we run into
Tell me did the others get the best of you
And now that we are through, Won’t you tell me the truth
Did the other girls get flowers too
Did they get flowers too

When you bought me diamonds,
Was it only for the girls that you were hiding
And when you said you loved me were you lying
Did you even notice I’d been crying

And when you gave me pearls
And said I’m all you needed in the world
When you left that night did you see another girl
Tell me now don’t make me a fool

It feels like de ja vu, each girl we run into
Tell me did the others get the best of you
And now that we are through, Won’t you tell me the truth
Did the other girls get flowers too

Or was it just us select few
That you declared undying love too
Cause no matter what we do
We can’t get back the things we gave to you
